Services other than energy that are required to maintain secure and reliable operation of the power system.
Ancillary services include frequency control, spinning reserve, voltage support, black start capability and other system support functions. Hydropower and some thermal plants often provide these services alongside energy. Operation and planning models may include ancillary service requirements as additional constraints on unit commitments and dispatch.
