Loss of load expectation (LOLE) is a probabilistic reliability index that expresses, for example, how many hours per year the system is expected to be short of capacity. It is widely used in generation expansion and operation studies as a criterion for acceptable adequacy, and can be imposed as a constraint when selecting new plant.
