Measure of the net economic worth of a project or development plan, calculated by discounting costs and benefits to a common base year.
Net present value is widely used in PWSC style studies to compare alternative expansion plans. It is obtained by discounting all future capital, operating and externality costs (and, where relevant, revenues or benefits) and summing them to a single figure for each option.
