National utility of Tanzania for which PWSC has provided long-term support on hydro-thermal operation, optimisation and dispatch.
For TANESCO, PWSC has carried out a sequence of projects covering both planning and real-time operation. Work in 1993 and 1995 contributed to tariff studies and conjunctive optimisation of the hydro-thermal system. Between 1996 and 1998 PWSC implemented SYSIM and SYRAP models for reservoir management and short-term scheduling. In 2008–2009 the operations planning methods were reviewed, SYSIM was replaced by AQUARIUS and updated SYRAP models were installed, with staff training. In 2010 PWSC upgraded the hydro/thermal dispatch system using enhanced AQUARIUS models and updated streamflow series. From 2018 onwards existing AQUARIUS models have been updated for the then current Tanzanian generation and transmission system, including short-term scheduling, long-term stored water value policies, dynamic simulations and on-site training under a multi-year support arrangement.
