Short-term scheduling problem that decides which generating units should be on or off in each period.
Unit commitment determines the on/off status of generating units over a horizon of hours to days, taking account of start-up times, minimum up and down times, ramp rates and other technical constraints. It is usually solved together with economic dispatch so that both commitment and loading decisions are consistent and least cost.
